I had an incredible Career Israel experience. I came on the program in February 2011, 6 months after graduating college and feeling lost (and unemployed) in the States. While in Israel I interned at the Child Psychology Department of Tel Aviv University and participated in fieldwork, working with graduate students on their studies about post traumatic stress disorder and adoption and I also honed my SPSS and data entry skills. I also gained a lot of hands on experience which consisted of working with children of foreign workers in the Mesila refugee center in South Tel Aviv and at a Kindergarten with autistic children in Rishon Le’Tzion through the Association for Children At Risk. Through my internship I gained an overall picture of what it’s like to work in multiple sectors of the field of child psychology. I was treated as an equal in all of these places of work and I was never asked to get coffee or scan papers!
Thanks to the madrichim, Itzik and Mara, I was able to gain a picture of what it’s like to live in Israel as well. Although I had been on several Israel programs before, this one showed me what life is like as an Israeli citizen: the good and the bad. I spent 5 months working on my Hebrew, creating lasting friendships and eating my way through Tel Aviv. I even won the ‘best intern’ superlative award at our closing ceremony. 😉
It’s been 3 years and I never left – I have since made Aliyah and established my life here based on the foundation from Career Israel. I am now working as a marketing communications manager for a marketing firm in Tel Aviv.
Career Israel is a program not to be missed. It doesn’t matter whether you plan on making Aliyah or not, it is an invaluable experience in another country, in your field of choice. The program provides you with an internship, housing, insurance, Hebrew classes and trips around the country, while still allowing you to be independent. It only requires a 5 month commitment, so why not? I would recommend this program to anyone interested!
